The Battle Between Trendy vs. Classic

One of our priorities, both as individuals and as Red Door DesignWorks co-owners is giving back to our communities. Last week we had the pleasure of collaborating with our local realtor partners on a workshop designed to educate homeowners about building equity in their homes.

For our portion of the program, we addressed how to hang artwork and gallery walls, as well as how to choose the best furniture for your home. We also shared insights into current design trends, how to select & sample paint colors and best strategies for making renovation decisions.

Making Renovation Design Decisions
One of the most difficult aspects of choosing finishes such as tile, countertop and lighting during a renovation is the question of longevity and resale. We always counsel our clients to make an assessment of their budget and how interested they are in frequently updating their home.

Trendier choices can look great, but can be expensive to replace if you tire of them. If you have a big budget to continually update your interior so it remains in style, you may be a good candidate for selecting trendier options.  Design magazines on newsstands, as well as Pinterest, Houzz and Interiors experts, can all be inspirational sources for trendier design directions.

It's also important to assess your priorities, in terms of honoring the architecture and design style of your home. If you want to honor a traditional home, or if you are looking for a "one and done" renovation, we suggest choices that will stand the test of time, such as: subway or hexagonal tile patterns; and, simple cabinetry in light wood or colors that can act as neutral in shifting color palettes over the decades.
